Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase and Fable is a classic reference work first published in 1870 by Ebenezer Cobham Brewer, designed to explain the origins of famous phrases, allusions, and figures from history, mythology, and literature. The dictionary contains approximately 16,000 entries covering idioms, proverbs, folk customs, superstitions, and historical or mythical characters, often presented with a distinctive wit and charm.
Originally aimed at those without a university education, the work has been continuously updated and expanded through numerous editions, with the 20th edition edited by Susie Dent being the most recent major release.
